On 22nd and 23rd October 2007, teachers at SMAN 10 Malang participated in a Sociology subject content training session facilitated by two Universitas Negeri Malang lecturers, Dr. Drajat and Rachmad Dwi Susilo.

The training covered various topics, such as: Sociology as a humanistic discipline and a social-culture reality concept; divergent behavior and social control; social norms, values, social interaction and personality growth; conflict and integration; social stratification and differentiation; social change; social mobility; the effect of social change, modernization and globalization; social culture and social research.

With numerous topics to cover, the training provided great insights for the Sociology teachers in SMAN 10 Malang as most of them do not hold relevant degrees for teaching the subject. “We refreshed our knowledge and found out we’ve misunderstood some of the steps in social research. Initially we set topics for our students to choose for their research, while actually it should be the opposite, let the problems in our society shape the topics our students choose,” said Bu Woro, a Sociology teacher in SMAN 10 Malang.
