uwc.jpgOn 11th - 16th March 2007, SMAN 11 Bandung was honored to receive special guests from the Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong. The guests, which consisted of 12 international students and 2 academic staffs, visited Bandung for a recycling project, a joint-community service program with SMAN 11 Bandung students.

For 5 days, students from SMAN 11 Bandung and UWC Hong Kong worked hand in hand to categorize organic, inorganic and paper waste, conduct composting processes, donate garbage bins, as well as to socialize the concept of recycling at two primary schools and to the local community around SMAN 11 Bandung.

The arrival of UWC Hong Kong students for the recycling project complemented the school’s commitment in carrying out a hands-on environmental study program, as part of the “Green School” campaign endorsed by the Mayor of Bandung. For all UWC students, conducting community service programs in various Asian countries has been an annual program.

Whereby SMAN 11 Bandung’s first recycling project conducted with these students has further encouraged SMAN 11 Bandung to make the recycling project an ongoing Extra Curricular Activity. In doing so they hope to promote recycling activities among all students in the school.

On March 11th, the USP Program Officer handed over the group of UWC Hong Kong students to their host families for their one week stay. This opportunity also introduced visiting students to learn something of the daily living of Indonesian students. The handover was held at the school and was hosted by the principal, Mr. Teddy Hidayat, and the School Committee. The event ended with a short tour of the school’s premises.

The next day, March 12th, was the welcome ceremony for the visitors. It was opened by the principal and included briefings about the project from the committee to the visitors. They had a tour to see two temporary public trash compounds in the school area and one public trash compound in the local district. They then went to Alun-alun to buy some trash bins for Thursday’s event in Babakan Pariangan Elementary School.

Food for Thought

There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.
