SMAN 2 Sekayu will send four students and one teacher to represent South Sumatera to join Indonesia Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) from 14 July to 14 August 2009. They are Dwi Riyadi Putra, Sahrial Syaputra, Ismiana Putri  andHafiza Dyantiny, the students, and Rizky Khoirunnisa, an English teacher. They have been through tough and tight selection process. This included an assessment on personal statements stated in the application forms for students and teachers, an interview by phone, hosted directly by Centre for Civic Education Indonesia (CCEI) to choose the right candidates with strong leadership potentials.

The IYLP is a collaborated program between Legacy International (USA), a non-governmental educational organization in Virginia, and CCEI. This program is to promote understanding on principles of democracy, civil society and youth leadership as practiced in the United States. Throughout, participants will observe the ways that US citizens participate in local and national government, how social problems are addressed, and community service.

It offers an opportunity for 17 students and 3 teachers in Indonesia to build international network amongst students from America and other joining countries. There are three provinces representing Indonesia such as Palembang (South Sumatera), Bima (Nusa Tenggara Barat), and Karawang (West Java). Each of them will send five to six students and one teacher. And SMAN 12 Sekayu is a ccessfully selected school to represent South Sumatera to participate in this international program. Having most participating students is also something to be proud of.

Fully sponsored by CCEI, the participants will experience unforgettable days in America. They are staying with host families and learning the American society structures. They will also explore the community participation by visiting various places. Meeting the other 60 students from different countries, they will have leadership training, a summer holiday, and visiting Washington D.C.

When they are back to Indonesia, they are expected to share their valuable knowledge to others and put all the things they learn into action so that they can improve their schools and community.

Food for Thought

There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.
