The W.O.R.D.S. Competition was organized by AMINEF’s Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs). It was worth attending as the finalists not only presenting their writings in English but they also exhibited Indonesian cultures.

“I am very surprised. I did not think that I could win. It took only a few weeks of preparation. I just thought that not many people know about Mapalus. I want to share its moral values with others.” Shinta said excitedly.

Mapalus, as she explained in her essay, is a tradition in Minahasa, North Sulawesi. It can be said as cooperation or working together. Mapalus always works as a group of 10 to 20 people in which they have a leader. The rule of Mapalus tradition is everyone will get the turn to help each other and get help from others. It promotes valuing society, clan, togetherness, deliberation, and discipline. The spirit of Mapalus to create peace and harmony does matter in changing the world.

“It was all Shinta’s efforts. She even interviewed her grandfather.” Erica Karapandi, her English Teaching Assistant (ETA), explained. “I just assisted her in the language.” She added.

Through good cooperation with her ETA, Shinta deserves prizes including TOEFL preparation materials and scholarships for high school tuition. Congrat!!

Food for Thought

There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.
