The World Environment Day was celebrated on June 5, 2009 at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta. Using the theme “Together to Save the Earth from Climate Change.”, the government encouraged everyone to work together to save the planet from environmental problems. During the celebration, the President handed out many environmental awards in recognition of the work and efforts of individuals, communities, organizations, and local governments in implementing excellent environmental programs.
The Adiwiyata awards were given to schools with programs to educate the students to become environmentally responsible. Two of such schools are SMAN 10 Malang (East Java) and SMAN 7 Manado (North Sulawesi). Both schools are part of Sampoerna Foundation’s United Schools Program (USP), a school-wide quality improvement program.
The prestigious awards were handed by the State Minister of Environmental, Prof. Rachmat Witoelar and witnessed by the President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. If the schools can maintain their excellent environmental programs for three consecutive years, they will be considered as Sekolah Adiwiyata Mandiri, which indicates that the schools are capable to implement sustainable environmental programs on their own.

At a glance, Tri Kurmiwati is just like an ordinary teacher of SMAN 19 Surabaya with teaching physics as her daily routine. But her faith, motivation, and efforts to contribute something to the community around her by changing a small thing into a research-based innovation can be a good model for all teachers in Indonesia. Actively involved as a secretary in Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP), an organization of all Physics teachers in Surabaya, Tri had an opportunity to know and share ideas and opinions with other teachers. “I envy my colleagues who have successfully won this Citi Fund Success (CFS) competition.” she said. In fact, her jealousy and environmental awareness uniquely combine to support her to be one of the Best 10 participants of Citi Success Fund 2008, beating other 672 high school teachers in Jabodetabek (a tri-province area), Bandung, Medan, Semarang, Surabaya, and Bali.
